The scandalous drama of Detroit Mayor Kwame took a bizarre turn Thursday as a judge sent the troubled mayor to jail for violating the terms of his bond in a pending perjury and obstruction of justice case.

The stunning development in the nation's 11th-largest city provoked bipartisan calls for Kwame immediate resignation, further undermined his tenuous and rapidly eroding political standing in Detroit and created the specter of a mayor clad in a green jumpsuit, governing from behind bars.

Official control of Detroit passed Thursday to Kandia Milton, Kwame chief of staff and childhood friend. In a written statement, Kwame, a Democrat in his second term, assured Detroiters that "trash will continue to be collected . . . grass will be cut, and fires will be extinguished."
